The IEC 62196-2 connector is the officially mandated standard for electric vehicle charging throughout Europe, designed to unify charging infrastructure across the European Union. Developed based on the widely accessible red IEC 60309 five-pin three-phase plug, this connector consolidates various high-current capacities, such as the common 16A and 32A variants, into a single standardized physical size. Instead of varying the plug diameter for different currents, the maximum allowable power is dynamically communicated to the electric vehicle via two dedicated communication pins and a simple resistor code embedded within the cable. Upon reading this integrated signal, the vehicle's onboard charger automatically limits the intake current accordingly, ensuring a secure and optimized charging process.
